Progress Report on Snowsport Modernisation - 20 Dec 06

SSE EGM and Modernisation
At the SnowSports England Extraordinary General Meeting on 18th November 2006, there was strong support for the principles of modernisation and for some aspects of the modernisation paper. However the proposals was defeated.
Members recognised that a tremendous amount of work has been completed to date and so the meeting tasked the Snowsport England Council and Board to work closely with the other Home Nation Governing Bodies to deliver the objectives of modernisation without compromising the continuation of this development and to deliver a report to the Snowsport England AGM in May 2007.

In addition you should read the SSGB Press release on Modernisation and Alan Jones' open letter.

Snowsport Scotland have rejected the proposals. See the presentation given at the AGM and a note highlighting the Modernisation pros and cons from that presentation.
Snowsport Wales have had their EGM and they are willing to accept the proposals, but with certain conditions attached.

9th July 2006   SnowSport Modernisation

A working party is looking at how to modernise skiing in the UK.
Relevant papers were collected together (in some cases with links to the originals) and made available here.
The SGFC (Steering Group of Federation Chairs - the group in charge of modernisation discussions) have now agreed to set up one central bank for official information on modernisation issues, in order to ensure that information is consistent and posted quickly with minimum fuss.
This is now available at http://www.freestyleweb.co.uk/modern. As a consequence these LSERSA pages will no longer be updated.

Open Meeting, Forums and Council Meeting
Snowsport England committed last December to visiting the regions and updating members on the latest position of modernisation and answering any questions from the clubs and regions. See http://www.britski.org/openmeetings.pdf for details of these meetings.

This page lists various documents on the discussions taking place about the modernisation of the whole structure of British Skiing.

The starting point for modernisation was pressure from the government applied to governing bodies to improve efficiency. With this pressure was a carrot. Basically "if you have a plan to modernise we will help financially and of course you will secure funding for the future". Unfortunately this only happened to the top 30 sports of which skiing is not one. Although money and help was intended to be provided by UK Sport when we started down this road, it has soon evaporated. Firstly the money ran out, then the support personnel were reassigned or made redundant and we have to finance and support the modernisation plan ourselves. One of the main documents supporting change was "Investing in Change". This lengthy document can still be found by clicking here. It is a generic document meant to enable governing bodies to try and define what they are and what they would want to be. It is full of useful information.

These changes may see the demise of some groups and a change of responsibilities for others. These all have to be determined and most importantly agreed by the membership of all the Federation member groups, which include :

SnowSport GB
4 HNGBs - England, Scotland, Wales, N Ireland
SCGB - Ski Club of GB
BASI - British Alpine Ski Instructors
BARSC - British Alpine Race Ski Clubs
CSWSA - Combined Services Winter Sports Association

In the October 2005 Working Group Report there is mention of a group of consultants called Genesis. For those who want more information about them and the work they have carried out before they should go to www.genesisconsult.com. Most of the member groups, especially the HNGBs and Snowsport GB, are putting up the money to employ these consultants. You should be aware that this money is being spent on behalf of the membership and could, of course, be spent elsewhere.

The Modernisation Working Group met in mid October. It was a very good meeting with many proposals coming from the Focus groups looking at Membership, coaching etc. These were discussed at length by the Working Group members and there should shortly be some proposals being agreed for presentation to the membership.

At the SSGB Congress on Monday 7th November 2005, a briefing paper was discussed by all the Federation members present. See below for a copy.

On 11th November 2005 Snowsport England updated its website with details on modernisation for Snowsport England members.
Snowsport England is looking to hold proper consultation with its membership regarding modernisation. It is important that the membership recognise they have a say regarding modernisation and that they should ask questions to ensure they have an informed view. Email: info@snowsportengland.org.uk

The various papers listed below are in reverse chronological order of publication. If you are new to this topic, please start at the top of the list and then read others for background information.

If you are interested in providing input via the Email Forum, you should register your interest at: info@snowsportengland.org.uk or snowsportfeedback@gmail.com. If you are already registered, with login and password, the questionnaire login page is https://www.freestyleweb.co.uk/bob/login.asp
