Chemmy
Alcott wrote herself further into the British championships history books today
when she became the skier ever to win the Women’s overall title five times.
Alcott (24, Twickenham) today surpassed the four times each record of Gina
Hathorn, Valentina Iliffe and Lesley Beck.
She
completed a clean sweep of all four discipline titles today when she clinched
the Women’s Giant Slalom title by a clear 3.90 seconds ahead of up and coming
Louise Thomas (18, Guildford) who overshadowed all other female members of The
British Land Alpine Ski Team when she finished runner-up to Alcott. “I am just
delighted to win today. I feel so confident in my giant slalom that I was out
to enjoy the runs today.” She said paying tribute to the support and enthusiasm
of her mother who died suddenly just less than a year ago. “Being honest I am
just not into the statistics and the records at the moment. I would have to be
pretty sad to think of that, I just look at my performances. But my Mum would
have been proud of me today and that is so important to me. She was really into
the stats and records, so today is with respect for my mum. These women like
Gina Hathorn and so on skied in a different era and it was a very different
sport, so what they achieved was amazing and got to places I have not reached.”
In the
Men’s Giant Slalom Andrew Noble (23, Edinburgh) won his first major senior
title when he held off the challenge from defending champion Noel Baxter (26,
Aviemore). Noble laid down the quickest first run to lead from David Ryding
(21, Lancashire). Ryding faltered on his second heat and could only manage
fourth overall. Baxter was just one hundredth of a second slower than Noble in
the second run, which elevated him to second.
Finishing
runner-up gave Noel Baxter an equal share of the overall Men’s Combined
Champion title along with Dougie Crawford (20, Bearsden, Glasgow). “It’s a
pretty good feeling to win here today.” Said the giant slalom winner Noble,
“This was the event I hoped to win and I came out today looking for victory.
Every time I have raced Noel in giant slalom this season it has been close,
very tight so I was glad to beat him today. I was good at the top on both runs,
but I was using new skis and they are a bit more aggressive on the steep than I
am used to so I was not so confident there.”
