British Junior/Children Championships Day 4

Press Release Issued by Snowsport GB

From The British Land National Junior & Children’s Championships, Meribel, France.

Day 4, Children’s Giant Slalom.

After ten days of favourable weather at the British Land National Ski Championships today’s Children’s Giant Slalom was contested in mixed visibility and regular snowfall which tested the younger, less experienced athletes’ ability to inspect and recall the testing courses. The race track was moved higher up the Du Corbey piste so that the steep finish pitch into the Stade was eliminated, but the rolling, twisting sections high on the course still proved a worthy challenge, particularly on the Boys’ first course. Ruts developed and a difficult drop off a sharp hairpin caught out many in the flat, poor light.

Overall winner of the Boys title was Nicholas Moynihan (13, Longfield, Kent). After leading by just one hundredth of a second ahead of Devon’s Dan Hall (14, Ipplepen), Moynihan was the only skier to break 47 seconds in the second run, setting the quickest time of 46.83 seconds. Despite still being in the younger Children 1 (Year of Birth 1994 & 1995) age-group Moynihan won outright, ahead of Meribel trained Jack Breton (14, Chichester) who finished runner up and won the Children 2 age-group. Breton has been consistent these past two days, also finishing runner-up in the Slalom yesterday: “It was pretty rutted on the second run especially but I skied it OK. I am a bit annoyed they did not use the Stade because it is steep and can be icy and I like it like that, I don’t like it so much flat as it was today, but I feel like I am skiing well at the moment.” Said Breton.

In the Girls Giant Slalom Emily Evans (12, Chatham, Kent) won the overall title. She lay fifth after the first run but overturned the 2.10 seconds deficit with the quickest second run to win by 41 hundredths of a second. As Moynihan did in the Boys field, Evans also won the outright Giant Slalom title while still in the Children 1 age-group, while Chldren 2 Girl’s Giant Slalom went to Toni Hodgkinson.
