News about Franki Simmonds
- Franki was one of our top racers a couple of years ago and gained a place in the England Alpine Ski Team. Caroline, her mother, reports that
she has so many bits
of her (ankle, back, shoulder, stomach) not working properly that she had to turn down her place.
There was no way that she could get fit enough to pass the fitness test
without setting off all those injuries, never mind actually withstand a full
time training programme.
- So ... she is in Canada coaching the top 6 U11 girls at
Banff Alpine Racers and having a ball. It sounds like she is making a really
good job of it too because she went out as the assistant coach for the
beginner, not quite up to racing, group and now she is taking the top team
to races all over Alberta, and they are cleaning up! Top 4 places in
Panorama and her top girl beat all the boys! She has pretty
good raw material to work with, but is clearly getting the best out of
them. She has done a little bit of training herself, and did win a local
club GS the other day, beating one of the male coaches who is ex Nor-am,
so she is keeping up her standards.
- As a full time ski career is clearly not on the cards she is off to Bristol
next year to read Mechanical Engineering, but she has already been 'spotted'
by the ski team and signed up so she is going to have to re-discover plastic!
-
Old usable 165cm slalom skis urgently needed for a Disabled Ski guy
- Caroline Simmonds writes: "I'm putting out a plea to see if anyone has any usable 165cm slalom
skis that they are prepared to donate to the Disabled Ski guys at Milton Keynes.
Whilst any donation of skis at any time, either pairs or singles, would be really useful, there is urgent
need for one pair as otherwise the order for a new pair has to go in this week."
- "They really do the most fantastic job at MK, and it really does make a huge difference to people’s lives."
- Read the rest of her letter by clicking here.
- If you can help please contact Caroline directly at carolinesimonds@btinternet.com or on
020 8994 5290.
