JUNIOR ROLLERSKIING - 28th May 2011
Felicity Bertram is a rollerski coach (cross country skiing on wheels) who runs the programme for juniors in London.
It is a side-branch of the London Cross Country Ski Club, which is also referred to as London Hyde Park
Cross Country Ski Club. She thinks it is an awesome sport, and would like to get more juniors involved.
Alpine skiers generally pick up rollerskiing very quickly, and the balance, strength and fitness
produced is beneficial for alpine skiing, and skating will help telemark skiers too.
There are some very good instructors in London, including Katya who has been regional champion
in Russia in her youth, and now is also one of the coaches in the British Nordic Development Squad.
Iain, who runs the company, has skied for Ireland, while Mantas skied for Lithuania at the Vancouver Olympics.
Then there is also have Levi, a former professional skier from the US, over in London as well, and Alan
has just won an award with SSE for his massive contributions to coaching, as well as having skied for GB
for many years - so we can offer coaching at the very highest levels.
The equipment all fits in a vehicle, so can actually be taken it to any area of smooth tarmac
to do sessions. Iain is committed to providing a wide range of the best available equipment to use for sessions.
The race calendar is here, and the ambition is to build a team in London and the South East who
are good enough to rival the Scottish clubs, which is where the British Nordic Development Squad is
based. The GB team is looking better than ever before, with Muzzy coming 6th at the Under 23s this year,
and several athletes going to the World Champs and Olympics. So alpine skiers that enjoy endurance
sports may wish to get involved with this as well, and Roy Young, the Chief Coach, is always looking for more talent -
The rollerski race calendar is here, and once there is a basic population of juniors, it is easy to lay
on other events as well.
Therefore there is massive scope to get more juniors involved in winter sports, whether to back up
their alpine skiing, or for cross country skiing's sake -
if you think you can help or would like to get involved please contact
Felicity Bertram.
It would be good to have more juniors at 5:30 at Richmond Park on a Wednesday evening,
and 11:30 at Hyde Park on a Saturday morning. Felicity is going to coach and train in Australia
for their ski season (but the other instructors will remain in London), but in the autumn,
she would have the freedom to travel around to introduce children to the sport nearer to their homes.
